The Highbanks: A Winter Wandering
Take some time to renew your spirit by joining our Ohio Illuman Winter Wandering as we venture out in The Highbanks. This is a solo walking trip into forests, along the waterways, and across the fields of one of Ohio's most beautiful parks.
Walking in nature is one of the safest activities we can do during the pandemic. Taking the time to be in creation is life-giving, calming, inspirational, and instructive. We will immerse our selves in the natural beauty of Highbanks Metro Park.
DETAILS
We are limited to 10 participants and plan to use the small shelter located in the Oak Cove Picnic area as a rendezvous point. Participants will find the shelter in the third parking area to the right after entry into the Oak Cove Picnic Area. The trails are across the way with a beautiful overlook observation deck on the Olentangy River which is where the term Highbanks originates. We will hold a small opening and closing ceremony in the shelter.
Please bring a folding camp chair, binoculars, time piece, and your own packed lunch. Dress for the weather. We will gather at the shelter at 9 am and should be finished by about 1:00 pm.

Highbanks Metro Park
Highbanks is named for its massive 100-foot-high shale bluff towering over the Olentangy State Scenic River. Tributary streams cutting across the bluff have created a number of deep ravines in the eastern part of the 1,200-acre park. Ohio and Olentangy shales, often containing outstanding large concretions, are exposed on the bluff face and sides of the ravines.
We will gather at 9 a.m. to have a brief check in and opening ceremony while keeping physically distant, and then begin our solo, 2-3 hour wandering. We will then re-gather once again keeping 6 feet of separation for a closing ceremony.
